Modern western herbal medicine encompasses both traditional knowledge and the disciplines of modern medical science. Medicinal herbalists use herbs in various forms, including alcoholic extracts known as tincture and, infusions, to bring about healing in body, mind and spirit.
The herbalists at Nine Springs have completed an in-depth 4 year degree-level course in herbal medicine, with a strong emphasis on western sciences, differential diagnosis, clinical examination and drug / herb interactions as well as botany, materia medica, the traditional use of plants and diagnostic and counselling skills.
The Herbalists are members of the National Institute of Medical Herbalism and adhere to their codes of conduct, ethics and practice.
Medical herbalists treat the whole person, in other words, they treat the symptoms as well as the root cause with medicine made from whole plants. Following a thorough investigation of a patient’s individual medical history, lifestyle and current issues, herbs are prescribed to activate and support the innate healing capacity of the body; encourage normal function; remove toxicity; correct imbalance and repair damage gently, thoroughly and without side-effects.
What can you expect at your appointment?
The initial consultation begins with a thorough assessment of the patient’s state of health. This will include a blood pressure reading and may also include some of the following examinations including tongue, pulse and, if appropriate an abdominal, respiratory or other system examination. Once a diagnosis has been made, the practitioner will dispense an individually formulated medicine together with any relevant advice on diet, exercise and any other areas which affect the patient’s present and future health. The end result is not solely the cure of a particular disease, but rather, over time, a return to an overall state of good health and well-being.
Medicines prepared individually for each patient are made using extracts of whole plants rather than isolated active constituents. Again and again it has been demonstrated that whole-plant remedies are safer and more effective than individual chemicals. The complex interactions of the various constituents of medicinal herbs act together to produce an effect that is safe, cumulative and deeply healing.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends entirely on the nature of the condition and your individual response to treatment. On average, a patient with a long-standing problem might need 5 to 6 sessions, spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart. In acute or short-term conditions treatment may be a lot quicker.
Can herbalism be used alongside medication from the doctor?
In most cases, yes. There is almost always a wide choice of herbs that can be taken alongside your medication. Herbalists are trained to check all contraindications and drug/herb interactions so that your herbal prescription will not interfere with any prescription drugs. We advise you to see your GP and get any tests done that may clarify what is going on.
What conditions can herbal medicine help with?
Herbal medicine can be used alone or alongside prescription drugs for a wide variety of conditions including digestive, cardiovascular, endocrine, respiratory, urinary, musculo-skeletal, emotional and non-specific.
Who would benefit from this type of therapy?
Patients suffering from medium to long term conditions; people without specific symptoms who simply wish to improve their energy levels and resilience to stress; babies, young children through to the elderly can all benefit from herbal medicine.
