What is Scar Tissue Release?
Scar tissue release is a gentle, yet powerful treatment that can help to reduce pain and improve function as tissues are released, realigned, and rehydrated.
Myofascial release (MFR) techniques are used for this treatment, along with some gentle massage. MFR involves gently placing the hands on and/or around the area of scarring, and ‘holding’ to allow the tissues beneath to respond. Subtle movements then allow the tissues to release.
Why treat scar tissue?
Scar tissue is formed as part of the body’s healing process following surgery, injury, or other trauma. During this process, extra collagen fibres are laid down, and these have a greater density than the other fibres around them. They can adhere to each other, or to bony landmarks in the body which can cause restrictions and pain, as well as reduce function in the surrounding areas.
Even when a scar looks to have healed well from the outside, it can be a different story beneath the surface as adhesions and restrictions cause pain, numbness and sensitivity, affect underlying structures and organs, and affect the movement of fluids through the body.
For example, lower back pain that doesn’t seem to improve following other treatments could be caused by a caesarean section or other abdominal surgery, and treatment to the scar could provide relief.
Emotional trauma is also stored within our body’s tissues, and this can be released during a scar tissue treatment, too – bringing a sense of overall healing.
What can I expect during a scar tissue treatment?
Before the treatment starts, an initial consultation will take place to gather details about your general health and wellbeing, as well as about your scar, and the related issues.
You’ll be asked to lie on the couch, and you can remain clothed – with just the scar and the surrounding area visible. A blanket will keep you warm and comfy throughout!
The treatment lasts an hour, and you’ll be given some techniques to use at home, to continue with the healing process.
How many treatments do I need to heal a scar?
How long is a piece of string? You may find you feel significant enough results after one treatment. Your therapist will let you know if they feel there is more work that can be done, and it’s worth noting that multiple treatments may be more effective if they’re closer together (with one or two weeks in between).
It can take up to a week for your body to ‘rebalance’ after a treatment, so don’t be surprised if you notice different sensations for a few days afterwards.
My scar is very old – does that matter?
In short – no! It’s never too late to start healing a scar.
