Ear Candling

Brief explaination about the therapy

Ear candling has been around for thousands of years and is used in many parts of the world. It sometimes comes under the heading of an old wives’ remedy and it is gentle warmth that is important. This is a completely pain-free treatment and many of us are rediscovering it today with excellent results.

Ear candles are hollow tubes or cones approximately 22cm long, and are both lightweight and pliable. A filter is contained in the bottom of the candle to help prevent any residue of the burning candle reaching the client’s ear. They are made from cotton or linen impregnated with wax and various herbs.

This enables the flow of energy to the ear to be improved, as well as the lymphatic system and the flow of cerumen, helping to soften any hardened wax or to slow down a too-rapid production.

What can the client expect at the appointment:

On the first appointment, a confidential consultation will be held to achieve the best result and maximize the benefits, followed by the treatment.

The practitioner will position the client on a comfortable massage couch. Then place the lit candle over the entrance to the ear canal and allow it to burn down just above the red line which is marked on the candle. When the treatment is complete, the candle is removed and extinguished in water. Then, the other ear will be treated in the same way. A short facial manual lymphatic drainage will follow.

What will happen in a session:

The client will probably be able to hear crackling, sizzling and popping sounds as the candle burns. As it burns it sends a gentle warmth spiralling down and it is this which massages the ear drum and stimulates the immune system.

The acupuncture points in the ear are treated at the same time and six of the main meridians (energy lines according to Chinese medicine) in a human body including those concerned with allergies either start or terminate at a point between the nose and the ear. The candle is therefore sending energy right through the body by means of its meridians.

How many sessions should the client need before they see a result:

Three treatments over a period of 4 – 6 weeks would be a good start. After just one treatment the client can notice an improvement. Everybody is different, so the number of sessions needed to see a long term improvement will depend on the condition being treated. Treatments will be discussed further during the first consultation.
